Spacious Amsterdam Apartment with Sunken Kitchen
Japanese design studio MAMM has completed a beautiful renovation of a duplex apartment in an 85-year-old Amsterdam building. The apartment was created for a family of four but, because they didn’t grow up living with Amsterdam’s gloomy weather, their main request was to have as much natural light as possible. To achieve this, MAMM stripped out the main staircase, any obstructing walls, and cut gaps in the floor to allow the light to filter down to the different levels. The main focus of the house is now a symbolic tower-shaped structure which flows through each storey and includes private areas such as bathrooms and bedrooms. In the main living space the tower opens up into a neatly sunken kitchen area.
